Box Hollow is one of those quiet, unhurried little trails that rewards you for slowing down. It runs about six-tenths of a mile of packed dirt through the lodgepole and granite outcrops of the Roosevelt National Forest, up in the northwest corner of Larimer County near Red Feather Lakes. It's short enough for an after-supper stroll and gentle enough for the whole family — a good stretch of legs when you want the smell of warm pine and the crunch of duff underfoot without committing to a full day on the mountain.
The Canyon Lakes Ranger District manages this ground, and the trail is open to hikers and horseback riders year-round, with mountain bikes welcome in the summer-and-fall window (July 1 through October 31). Dogs are allowed too — keep them under control and pack out what they leave. Because it's a small spur, it's easy to miss from the road, so line it up on the map before you go and check current conditions and access with the Canyon Lakes Ranger District, especially in shoulder season when back roads can be soft or snowed in.
